Cheers steve. I'm enjoying this month's mix in the car myself I must admit. My top track is probably Wait actually, great vocal and a kind of well-resolved production (at least before I cluttered it up with bits of Hey Hey and Only One :) I love the vocal on NBTYL too, but I wonder if I should have tracked down the original version as this one sounds a little all-vocal-and-nothing-else to me.

Nice!

I've heard Circles a few times before, but not this mix. Me like!
Much harder than others I've heard which tend to be more old skool (as in 70s, not as in 90s).

Also enjoyed Hey Hey, and the rolling bassline on Only One is knockout.
Nothing Better Than Your Lovin has got a great vocal track; I was seat-bopping a lot.

I'm jumping between OO and NBTYL as favourite tracks.

Thanks steve. That reminds me I should get around to posting a blog entry thing for tanned. Yes it was called Developed for a while -- where does it still say that? All the tags I can see here seem to say Tanned.

Superman is kick ass. Listening to it all yesterday I realized how good it and also Crazy, the new blackcoffee track, both are. The vocal mix of superman is good too. Here I felt like using the instrumental for some reason, and I like its jazzy feel.

Still working on the damned beat-matching, which is getting there but I can still hear mismatches if I'm feeling critical, particularly on a clear system.
I don't listen to the radio, but based on the charts in the shops I would (very roughly) estimate that the commercial radios spins about 45% local pop, about 45% international pop, and about 10% other (like kwaito, traditional SA. There are a couple of big names that bridge the pop-other divide a little. Mind you, the local pop is starting to blur the lines a bit. Some kind of mish mash of house, kwaito, pop, RnB.).
The clubs are similar, but there are a lot of places that are proper kwaito. There are lots of smaller blus, so the spread is wider. There are even a few on Obs Lower Main, down the road from our house. But they look a bit scary. ;)
I don't hear so much of the UK funky end of things, but then I don't get out much.

Re August / Tanned (aka Developed, according to the mp3):
I dug Superman a lot.
I have heard this recently, actually. We went to a proper SA wedding up in Soweto, attended by extended family from all over Africa. They had a pack of waiter-type guys and gals milling around and before the food the MC grabbed a mic and announced that they (the waitrons) were going to show us how they do it in Soweto. Body popping and a-rocking commenced to the sounds of the aforementioned Superman. It was very, very, groovy.

I also liked Uthando and Champagne for their loungey kind of vibes, foot tapping, chilling with a glass of something slightly sparkly.
I got some tingly bhangra vibes from Eshelon, but that might just be me.

Here endeth the overly long comment.

Thanks, yeah that's pretty cool.

Something I've been wondering, how well known are these afro/kwaito-influenced sounds in cape town right now? Do you hear blackcoffee on the radio? In bars? What about kentphonik? I know they're big in their own scenes, but I don't know whether my friends would know them, for example.

In London this SA sound is big, but in a small kind of way =) I hear it on the pirates all the time. There's a blending between this stuff and UK Funky, with DJ's playing both in the same set. But I don't think you'd hear either on the commercial stations like Kiss much, or at least you didn't a few months back.
Church Lady is probably my top track too, it's genius.

I'm still trying to work out what I think about this mix. I'm not completely feeling it, I have to say -- not compared to say, Risen, which I still like even now. I can't quite work out why. I guess I'm probably a bit worn out on some of the tracks -- a definite hazard of the process! Perhaps in a few months when I've got some distance again it'll start to make more sense.
Top tracks for me:
Church Lady - Dennis Ferrer feat. Danil Wright.
Love the big organ sounds (as the actress said to the bishop).

Ready Or Not (Copyright Old Skool Mix) - Yasmeen
Always like me some Copyright, especially their early work (no, seriously).

Self Religion - Believe In Me (Hardsoul Reconstruction) - Hardsoul feat. Fierce Ruling Diva
Great stuff. Hardsoul also seem to churn out quality goodness.

I'm trying very hard not to look at Traxsource...
Too easy to spend lots of money there!
If your client has already downloaded the first version (and you're keen enough to want the second) then you may need to prod it to download the new version. In iTunes for example you can delete the existing entry, right click on the podcast and choose Show all available episodes, then click on get next to the April episode. The new version is 40m46s in length, the first one was 40m42s.
Sweet. Cheers for the feedback Steve.

Yeah The Message is a great track, in fact the whole album Strange Place for Snow is excellent and well worth checking out. While making the mix I listened more closely to the Shank album Do than I had before, and came to realize how good it was. I also like the Nils Petter Molvaer tracks although he has a quite specific style. The Fever Ray album is also excellent although not actually jazz per se, more kind of electro.

I suspect many people will struggle with this mix compared to the previous one, as it's quite dark and a little disjointed. In a way I too prefer the sunny vibes and clear focus of the Risen mix. But it was challenging trying to mix this stuff and it had to be done.

Track times, good idea. Here's some rough start times for this mix

0:00 Simply So
6:00 Maison de Reflexion
11:00 The Message
15:30 -Shank
18:20 Keep the Streets Empty for Me
23:00 Frozen
29:00 El.
32:00 S-Hank
37:00 Soulhack
Groovy! I like jazz and I like Scands.
There was a tingle of melancholy, but I fought it back with coffee.

I dug the piano vibes in The Message and the great sax work in El.
Loved both Shank tracks. What does that mean? Maybe I'm turning German.
Also, really dug Soulhack. Something pleasingly rough and dirty and shakey about it.

Now I have a strange urge to go and put together a bookshelf called Jonathan. Or a bed called Fnor.

Further demands / requests from your podcast listening public:
how about a (rough) time list thing for (future) tracks? e.g. 37:00 Soulhack - Forss (Sweden)
I tend to listen to stuff while I'm working, and when there are no lyrics it makes it a bugger to tell what track you're listening to. I listened to it again this morning with an eye on the timer so that I could figure what was what. :)

I also hit on the caching theory, but in testing here at work with a mate we seemed to disprove it. But testing again now, I think you're right: I can't get it to fail now if I religiously hit refresh every time. The page could helpfully point out that you need to hit refresh. At least that mystery is resolved. Cheers!
Yes feeds for comments, or perhaps more simply just a way to be alerted by email when someone replies to your comment.
Not to quell your rant, or protect your hosts, or recappoo (although I was thinking of using it for a project I'm working on) but it seems like a problem with implementation rather than the system.
I think it's doing something odd with caching maybe.
I did ten in a row on http://recaptcha.net/learnmore.html without hitting a bad one.

Fake email addy, get words right, get "You have not entered an email address that we recognize."
Back button, try again, get "The string you entered for the image verification did not match what was displayed."
However.
Refresh lostpw page, try again, get "You have not entered an email address that we recognize." again.
IYSWIM.

Was it appropriate that the first two words that came up for me were durable and desperate? :)

I don't really like image wotsits like this, though. Pain in the butt.
Cheers Carlo. Let me know how you get on.

Yeah the tracks, like the films, are best not taken too seriously. But there's a lot to like. I especially like the melodies, which have a kind of unselfconcious energy about them.
I reserve the right to retract later, but I find your choice of music, disturbing... Still busy downloading (damn slow SA connection)

Also, really like the blog design; picture preview is cool.

Thanks Steve. Yeah those might be among my top picks too. Interestingly Sonu Nigam is involved in both (see google). Having listened to the tracks in the mix like, twenty or thirty times, I now have them on permanent rotation in my head :)
Top tracks for me:
For Your Eyes Only - like the hypnotic dub kind of feel;
Aaj Ki Raat - slightly 'woody flavour with a great uplifting kind of vibe.

Looking forward to next month :).
